GOLD FRAMES
We have both ready made and
custom made frames. All of the frames shown on this page
are ready made and not all frames are available in all sizes. It
depends on what we have in inventory at the time the inquiry is made.
The frame styles that start with a J are ready made frames.

A third piece of advice that came back to me as
I looked around the crowded group exhibition was offered by my friend,
Thomas S. Buechner.
He explained that a group of his small plein air paintings went unsold
when they were first exhibited inside thin wooden frames. “I first
thought those sketches should be presented with simple, inexpensive
frames because they were small and didn’t take much time to complete,”
he recalled. “Boy, was I wrong. Six months later I exhibited the same
paintings inside gold-leaf frames with three-inch-wide moldings, and
every one of them sold. I learned that paintings—especially small
ones—don’t look important if the frame doesn’t say they are important.
From that point on, my motto has been ‘Want it sold? Frame it in
gold.’”

 Our
frames are constructed from bass wood moldings. Wood glue, wooden
splines and screws are used in the corners to help support and prevent
separation at the joint. We offer both simple and ornate frame styles.
Frames with ornamental corner designs are hand carved and then sanded.
The wooden frame bodies are sized with hide glue and receive multiple
coatings of gesso. The gessoed frames are hand sanded to a silky smooth
finish.
 Yellow,
red and black clays are applied to the gessoed frames. The clays contain
a hide glue that is reactivated with a water/alcohol mixture called
"gilder's liquor". Onto the moistened clay surface the tissue
thin sheets of gold leaf are laid by a skilled gilder. After the gilded
frame has dried the high surfaces are burnished to a sheen with an agate
stone. The panel and low areas are left matte for contrast. We distress
our frames to give them an antiqued appearance.
